What Is Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy?
Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) applies the core principles of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy to support individuals in navigating life’s stress and emotional challenges.
As humans, we naturally develop patterns to manage pain and stress, especially from relationships. Sometimes these patterns become stuck, keeping us trapped in cycles of stress and dysfunction without us even realizing it.
In EFIT, I partner with you to gently unravel your story and uncover what’s holding you back. Together, we work to break unhelpful patterns while honoring the strengths that support your true self—helping you move toward greater emotional freedom and authenticity.

EFIT’s Effectiveness is Documented
EEFIT is backed by over 30 years of rigorous, peer-reviewed research showing its success in addressing:
- Emotional distress
- Negative relationship patterns
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Trauma
This evidence-based model consistently delivers strong outcomes across a wide range of challenges.
The EFIT model brings focus to the root cause of client distress, rather than only symptom-reduction. As such, the results have shown to sustain over time after treatment has ended.
How Does Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy Work?
Think of your emotions like dashboard lights in a car. When something feels off in your interactions or within yourself, these lights turn on to signal that your attention is needed.
You don’t have to be overwhelmed by every warning light or lose your way. Instead, you can pause, breathe, and explore what’s triggering these signals to understand what truly needs your focus.
EFIT helps you identify what your emotions are trying to communicate. It guides you to connect the dots in your personal story, uncovering habitual responses and deciding which patterns you want to change.
By bringing mindfulness and clarity to your experiences, EFIT empowers you to express yourself authentically and make choices that align with your values, leading to deeper connection with yourself and others.
How Therapy Works
This approach combines several proven ideas to help you understand and change the patterns that keep you stuck.
- We use knowledge about how humans connect and feel safe to guide your healing.
- We trust that you’re motivated to make the best choices for yourself.
- We recognize that every interaction affects all your relationships and how you respond.
Many of us develop ways of handling emotions—like shutting them down or reacting strongly—that helped us survive difficult or unsafe situations growing up.
But as adults, those old patterns can get in the way of how we want to live and relate. It’s like running outdated software on a new device.
In therapy, I’ll help you notice these patterns and work through tough feelings like shame, sadness, or fear. Together, we’ll create new experiences that help you update your internal “software” so you can respond to life and relationships in healthier, more helpful ways.
Why I Practice EFIT Therapy
I’m Danielle Sethi, a Marriage and Family Therapist. I have been in love with the broader Emotionally Focused Therapy model from the moment I first learned about it.
EFT’s approach to change resonates with me on a professional and human level.
And of course, the search for change and healing is typically what brings people to therapy.
EFT’s approach to change is relational. Yet, EFIT gives people a chance to experience that healing in the presence of a therapist (instead of a partner or family member).

Together we’ll uncover the underlying mechanisms of the problems you bring to sessions and work toward a fresh new chapter of emotional peace and healthy connections.
Through my extensive training in the EFIT model, I’ve learned some important lessons that shape how I work:
- Every behavior serves a purpose, even if that purpose is unconscious or seems unhelpful from the outside.
- Real change starts with understanding why behaviors happen in the first place.
- Change isn’t about shaming yourself out of old patterns.
- True transformation comes from combining that understanding with new, healing experiences in therapy, kind of like updating your internal software to support lasting growth.
This approach guides every EFIT session I have with my clients.
Who Is EFIT Therapy For?
I use the emotionally focused therapy model to guide my work with clients looking for support with:
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”
